The story of the world’s first compact track loader, the TL20, began with a visit to a U.S. construction site in 1985.

While observing machines at the jobsite, Takeuchi founder, Akio Takeuchi noticed a wheeled skid steer loader stuck in the mud, even though the weather was clear. When he asked local users about the situation, they explained that many jobsites in the U.S. had clay-rich soil, and when the ground became muddy after rain, mud would build up on the tires, making it difficult to continue working.

Takeuchi recognized that the excellent ground contact and mobility of tracks could hold the key to solving this challenge. Soon after returning to Japan, he began developing a compact track loader that could operate more reliably regardless of weather or ground conditions.

Introduced to the North American market the following year, the TL20 represented a new solution to the challenges users faced with compact construction equipment. Its dedicated rubber tracks improved traction and mobility while reducing ground disturbance and enhancing performance on soft and uneven terrain.

The TL20 opened up new possibilities for compact construction equipment across a wide range of applications, including residential construction, landscaping, agriculture, utilities, and countless other jobsites.

Forty years after its introduction, the TL20 remains a cornerstone of the compact track loader industry, supporting jobsites around the world.
