1960-1970s
The Founding of Takeuchi Manufacturing and the Birth of the Compact Excavator
August 1963 : Takeuchi Manufacturing established
Our founder, Akio Takeuchi established Takeuchi Manufacturing in Sakaki-machi, Hanishina-gun, Nagano, Japan. For several years after founding the company, he worked as a subcontractor, machining parts for other manufacturers. However, he always held a dream of manufacturing complete products in-house and bringing them to market under the Takeuchi brand.

Development and mass production of the world’s first 360-degree slew compact excavator, the TB1000
At the time, excavators were predominantly large machines. In small-scale construction projects, such as roadwork in urban areas and residential foundation work, workers often had to rely on manual labor using shovels and pickaxes because large excavators could not access the sites.
One day, Takeuchi received a request from someone involved in residential foundation work: “Could you develop a compact, highly maneuverable excavator that could be used in tight spaces where large excavators could not fit?” This was a major turning point in his life.
“The concept was already in my head. All I needed to do was swing the shovel and make the entire machine slew,” Takeuchi later recalled.
After a process of trial and error, the world’s first 360-degree slew compact excavator, the TB1000, was completed in 1971.
To achieve 360-degree slewing, the machine was equipped with a slewing bearing. The idea was inspired by slewing bearings used at the time to drive parabolic antennas. A U.S.-made hydraulic travel motor was also adopted. The motor had originally been used in airport baggage handling equipment.
When the TB1000 was unveiled, some people made fun of the unprecedented compact excavator, saying, “It looks like a toy! Are you going to display it in your living room?”
However, the small yet highly efficient compact excavator received an overwhelmingly positive response from civil engineering professionals, and word of its outstanding maneuverability spread rapidly. Driven by growing demand for small-scale construction in urban areas, the TB1000 became so popular that production could not keep up with demand for a time.
January 1978
Start of compact excavator exports
Takeuchi took its first step as a construction equipment manufacturer. As urban development progressed, demand for compact excavators continued to grow, and everything seemed to be moving smoothly. However, the company soon faced a major challenge: the lack of an established sales network.
Entering the construction equipment market without a distribution network was no easy task. No matter how good the products were, they could not reach customers without the right sales channels and partners.
Takeuchi therefore decided to focus first on manufacturing and entered into OEM agreements with established construction equipment manufacturers.
Takeuchi machines became widely used throughout Japan through the established sales networks of these manufacturers. However, because the machines were sold under other brands, recognition of the Takeuchi brand itself did not grow.
Recognizing the limitations of the domestic market, Takeuchi thought, “The Japanese market is dominated by established construction equipment manufacturers with well-established sales networks. We should look overseas, where the compact excavator market is still largely undeveloped.”
This marked the beginning of Takeuchi’s overseas expansion.
In 1978, Takeuchi began exporting machines under its own brand. Initially, exports were handled through trading companies, but in 1979, the company established a subsidiary in the United States and shifted to direct sales. Takeuchi believed that communicating directly with local customers would provide a deeper understanding of their needs and valuable insights for improving Takeuchi’s products.
1980-1990s
Pioneering World-First Innovations and Global Expansion

Development of the world’s first compact track loader, TL20
In 1985, Takeuchi visited a construction site in the United States and noticed that conventional skid steer loaders were covered in mud and left unused, despite the good weather. When he asked why, he was told that the soil in the United States contains a lot of clay, and when it rains, the ground becomes muddy and mud sticks to the tires, making it difficult to continue working. At the time, it was widely recognized that skid steer loaders could not fully perform on muddy ground after rain.
After returning to Japan, Takeuchi began developing a track loader that could operate even in rainy and muddy conditions. In 1986, he completed the world’s first compact track loader, the TL20. By replacing the wheeled undercarriage with tracks, the machine achieved excellent off-road capability on muddy and uneven terrain, enabling efficient operation.
Takeuchi emphasizes that “a tenacious pursuit is what drives every development.”
“You cannot simply imitate others. I am constantly thinking about how we can mechanize our customers’ work and how we can make their work easier. That is the belief that truly matters.”
This philosophy has continued to guide Takeuchi’s product development ever since.
November 1989 : Takeuchi machines at the demolition of the Berlin Wall
In 1989, approximately 40 Takeuchi excavators were used in the demolition of the Berlin Wall, demonstrating high maneuverability and supporting efficient work on narrow and unstable ground. The scenes were broadcast around the world, providing an opportunity to showcase the exceptional safety and controllability of Takeuchi excavators.
This historic achievement further supported Takeuchi’s global expansion, leading to the establishment of subsidiaries in the UK in 1996 and France in 2000.
1990s
Pioneering an untapped market and customer-driven innovation
When Takeuchi first entered overseas markets, the market for compact excavators hardly existed.
Normally, companies entering a new market develop sales strategies based on detailed market research. However, when the market itself does not yet exist, market research cannot capture potential demand.
Takeuchi therefore set out to pioneer and develop a new market. Through construction machinery exhibitions and demonstrations, the company showcased the practical value and excellent controllability of compact excavators through actual operations, communicating their value to customers.
As a result, Takeuchi’s compact excavators attracted significant attention at CONEXPO in the United States and quickly spread to markets around the world. Initially, some people even laughed at the machines, saying they looked like toys. However, once they saw the machines performing actual digging work, their perception changed completely. The practicality and value of Takeuchi’s compact excavators became widely recognized.
Behind their acceptance by users around the world was Takeuchi’s unwavering commitment to field-driven development. Takeuchi has always focused on the needs and challenges arising at customers’ jobsites and incorporated them into product development, continuously improving performance, quality, and durability.
The voices and insights gained from the field have also become a valuable driving force behind the development of new products and technologies.
1970-1990s
World-first features adopted by Takeuchi for compact excavators
1995
Development of the TB070W and entry into the European wheeled excavator market
As Takeuchi continued to expand into overseas markets, a request came from a European customer for a wheeled excavator.
At the time, infrastructure construction on paved roads and in urban areas was active throughout Europe, and the mobility of wheeled excavators, which could travel from one jobsite to another, was highly valued.
For Takeuchi, whose product development had centered on crawler excavators, wheeled excavators were an entirely new field. However, guided by its philosophy of “manufacturing driven by real jobsite needs,” Takeuchi decided to respond to customer demand and make a full-scale entry into the European wheeled excavator market.
Working with a German construction machinery manufacturer, Takeuchi began developing a new model, the TB070W, based on its 7-ton-class crawler excavator, the TB070.
The biggest challenge in the development process was compliance with the road traffic laws of each EU country. Because wheeled excavators need to be registered and operate on public roads, they had to meet strict legal requirements in each country. Although this was an unprecedented challenge for Takeuchi, the company conducted extensive research into these regulations and made careful specification adjustments, overcoming each issue one by one.
After persistent development efforts, Takeuchi’s first wheeled excavator, the TB070W, was completed. This marked Takeuchi’s full-scale entry into the wheeled excavator market, which has since become one of the important pillars supporting Takeuchi’s product lineup.
1999
Development of the FR series equipped with the STS (Side-to-Side) boom system
“Bringing the ultimate maneuverability of compact excavators to mid-sized models.”
Based on this challenging concept, the first model in the FR Series, the TB75FR, was developed in 1999.
The FR Series features Takeuchi’s original STS (Side-to-Side) boom system and short-tail design. These features created a compact machine that set it apart from conventional mid-sized excavators, while delivering outstanding performance in confined worksites.
The unique STS boom system allows the boom itself to move from side to side, enabling digging across a wide area in front of the machine without repositioning the excavator. This mechanism is particularly effective for ditch digging. It allows continuous digging without moving the machine, while the operator can maintain a natural posture facing the direction of work, helping reduce fatigue during extended operations.
The FR Series delivers outstanding stability, digging force, and working range. In addition, the STS boom can be retracted behind the machine’s centerline, allowing 360-degree slewing with only minimal overhang beyond the track width, providing excellent maneuverability in confined spaces.
The FR Series, featuring the world’s first STS boom system, was developed by engineers who carried forward Takeuchi’s spirit of “never imitating others.”
Born from Takeuchi’s unique ideas and technology, the FR Series remains a distinctive product that embodies the Takeuchi spirit and continues to be loved by users around the world.

From World’s First to World Leader
2000
Development of Takeuchi’s first crawler dumper, the TCR50
Responding to requests from European customers, Takeuchi developed and launched its first crawler dumper, the “TCR50.”
At that time, the mainstream crawler dumpers used an “upper-structure swing system,” in which the cab and vessel (dump bed) rotated together. In contrast, the TCR50 was the world’s first crawler dumper to adopt a “vessel swing system.” By keeping the cab fixed and allowing only the vessel to rotate, the system reduced the turning radius and enabled the operator to smoothly change the direction of the vessel even in confined spaces.
In addition, because the operator could focus on adjusting the orientation of the vessel, the system also contributed to improved operability and safety.
This innovative design later became a standard mechanism for crawler dumpers. The TCR50 stands as a symbol of how a “World’s First” technology developed by Takeuchi evolved into a new industry standard.
2006
Development of the “World’s First” lithium-ion battery-powered excavator, the TB016E
In the mid-2000s, environmental awareness was rising worldwide, and efforts toward “zero emissions” and “low noise” operation were beginning to be required in the construction industry. In Europe in particular, regulations on exhaust emissions at urban and indoor worksites were being tightened, and interest in the electrification of construction equipment was rapidly growing.
In response to these changing times, Takeuchi developed the world’s first excavator equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the “TB016E.” In 2006, the model was exhibited at INTERMAT, an international trade show held in Paris, France.
The TB016E was developed as a prototype by replacing the diesel engine of a 1.6-ton-class excavator with an electric motor and equipping it with a lithium-ion battery. Its zero-emission operation, producing no exhaust gases, and its exceptionally quiet and clean operating performance were groundbreaking technologies at the time, making it a pioneering effort in the electrification of construction equipment.
Takeuchi’s commitment to electrification continued with the “TB117e” in 2010, which was exhibited at CONEXPO, an international trade show held in the United States, in 2011, leading to the global launch of the “TB20e” in 2023.
2021-2023
Expansion of the short tail swing excavator lineup - R series
In the early 2020s, demand for compact short tail swing excavators that could operate efficiently while minimizing rear overhang steadily increased, driven in part by the expansion of the rental market.
To meet this growing demand, Takeuchi expanded its short tail swing excavator lineup and introduced the “TB325R,” “TB335R,” and “TB350R” to global markets.
Takeuchi’s short tail swing excavators combine a compact size with excellent stability, delivering top-class performance among short tail swing machines in the same class. Despite their compact size, these models maintain uncompromised performance, offering a wide working range and excellent power. They deliver high productivity and reliability even throughout a full day of operation.
These models were developed based on existing conventional models in the same class. Fitting all the components into a more limited space while maintaining the performance of the existing models was a major challenge.
However, drawing on decades of experience and expertise in compact excavator development, Takeuchi successfully expanded its short tail swing lineup and established the R Series through its unique technology and ideas.
September 2023 : Global launch of Takeuchi’s first fully battery-powered excavator, the TB20e
In 2023, Takeuchi launched the “TB20e” globally. The TB20e is Takeuchi’s first fully battery-powered compact excavator, marking a major step forward in the company’s commitment to electrification.
While electrification has become a global trend in the construction equipment industry, there were many technical challenges to overcome in making it practical, including battery performance, charging infrastructure, and operating conditions on worksites. Takeuchi tackled these challenges with the goal of balancing performance with environmental considerations.
Equipped with a 24.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, the TB20e provides up to eight hours of continuous operation, depending on working conditions. It produces no exhaust emissions and significantly reduces noise, making it suitable for use in urban areas, residential neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, and other worksites where environmental considerations are important.
The TB20e supports standard onboard charging, with optional offboard fast charging also available when needed.
While maintaining productivity comparable to the diesel-powered “TB216,” Takeuchi developed the TB20e by combining innovative technology with practical operational solutions.
The TB20e also features Takeuchi Fleet Management (TFM), enabling remote monitoring of location, operating hours, and alerts. This helps improve fleet efficiency, reduce downtime, and lower life-cycle costs.
The TB20e embodies Takeuchi’s spirit of challenge and technical expertise. By combining excellent operational performance with environmental performance, it is opening up new possibilities for compact excavators and supporting sustainable construction around the world.
